Crisis package for Longyearbyen
Referring to the article in Svalbardposten: Svalbardposten
It is a very demanding situation for everyone in Longyearbyen and for the Longyearbyen Local Council. This is a tremendous voluntary effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Measures have been introduced which are a vigorous intervention of the individual's freedom. This affects business and society as a whole.
We will continue the good job of keeping ourselves free of infection. If we manage to stay that way, we will soon be one of the first places in Norway that can begin to achieve a normal operation of society. This will have a great value for everyone.
My goal is to keep Longyearbyen free from infection.
It's a tough time for everyone, and as in many other crises, some groups are hit harder than others.
That is why we have requested the Norwegian parliament to grant a special crisis package for Svalbard, because the very peculiar conditions in Longyearbyen require it, and because some of the national measures have no effect on Svalbard.
This package of measures contains 3 things, but we see that we obviously need more, but first we need to make sure that workers have the money they need, and we need to make sure that the company stays liquid.
- Reduced fees / municipal fees
- Unemployment benefits
- Infrastructure projects
We expect the Norwegian parliament understand the serious situation, and assist us when they make their decisions later today.
