I Set Out to Track the Sun

Utstilling i Galleri Svalbard

Risa Horowitz

Horowitz

Sommeren 2019 er hun valgt ut til The Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture artist residency program i Dawson City, Yukon.

Utstillingen står til 31.12.2018 - VELKOMMEN!

Risa Horowitz (b. 1970) presents works that continue her explorations of the experience and representation of time and space. The exhibition is the culmination of several years of focus on conceptual approaches to the astronomical.
This project combines work Horowitz generated on the Arctic Circle Summer Solstice Expedition artist residency in June 2017, and arising from her explorations as artist-in-residence with Galleri Svalbard in early 2018. The exhibition consists of two series of photographs – from digital and large-format film – that revolve around tracking the un-setting sun. In 2017 Horowitz set out to track the midnight sun but failed: it was mostly cloudy or overcast. Resulting from a 24-shooting marathon, I Set Out to Track the Sun imagines where the sun should be in each of the four compass directions. As if to Track the Sun imagines the sun’s position in the round, with figure and buoy standing in for the otherwise persistently bright but hidden star. Also presented is a video compilation of imagery that Horowitz gathered – collectively entitled Practicing Standing – during the twenty-four hours that she spent in meditative action observing and being within the Longyear Valley. These works are complemented by a vinyl wall work that presents a rendition of this valley, within which Galleri Svalbard is located.
Toronto-born Risa Horowitz is a visual and media artist whose practice blurs boundaries between expert-amateur, hobby-work, and leisure-productivity. Horowitz is based in Regina, Saskatchewan where she is an associate professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Regina.
Horowitz’s works are in the collections of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Canada Council Art Bank, and Global Affairs Canada (on permanent display at Canada House, London). She has exhibited across Canada and abroad. Horowitz has attended residencies at The Banff Centre and Cité des Arts in Paris through the Canada Council International Residencies Program. In summer 2019 Horowitz will attend the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture artist residency program in Dawson City, Yukon.

Exhibition will last until 31.12.2018 WELCOME!
