FHI konkluderer med at det i perioden fra september 2024 til dags dato, er manganinnholdet for høyt til at vannet kan gis til spedbarn, altså barn mellom 0-12 måneder. Dette betyr at vann fra springen ikke skal gis til spedbarn eller blandes i morsmelkerstatning som gis spedbarn. Det er ifølge FHI ingen umiddelbar fare forbundet med å drikke vannet for resten av befolkningen. Dette gjelder også gravide eller ammende kvinner.
FHI understreker at det er ingen akutt helsefare forbundet med å drikke vannet. Det er inntak av mangan over lengre tid som kan være helseskadelig. Det er derfor behov for tiltak som kan redusere manganinnholdet i vannet.
Spedbarnsforeldre vil motta en tekstmelding, som de kan fremvise for å hente ut vann i Svalbardbutikken.

Manganese Content in Drinking Water
Some of the water samples taken in Longyearbyen show high concentrations of manganese. Longyearbyen Local Authority (LL) is cooperating with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI), and the sample results were sent to them for analysis.
FHI concludes that from September 2024 to the present day, the manganese content is too high for the water to be given to infants, i.e., children between 0-12 months. This means that tap water should not be given to infants or mixed in infant formula. According to FHI, there is no immediate danger associated with drinking the water for the rest of the population, including pregnant or breastfeeding women.
FHI emphasizes that there is no acute health hazard associated with drinking the water. It is the intake of manganese over a longer period that can be harmful to health. Therefore, measures are needed to reduce the manganese content in the water.
Parents of infants will receive a text message, which they can present to collect water at the Svalbard store.
