Longyearbyen avalanche memorial day (19.12.)

On Monday the 19.12. it is one year ago the avalanche hit road 230

Longyearbyen city council, Svalbard Church and The Governor of Svalbard welcomes the public to mark the memorial day

  • Monday 19.12.2016 6 p.m. at the square outside Longyearbyen cultural centre.

The event begins outside the cultural centre at 6 p.m. with songs performed by Store Norske men’s choir, welcoming speech by the leader of the local council Arild Olsen, and an invitation to take part in a torchlight procession up to road 230. Free torches from Svalbardbutikken will be available. The Governor of Svalbard Kjerstin Askholt will welcome the audience, State Secretary Gjermund Hagesæther delivers his speach, and priest Leif Magne Helgesen invites to a minutes slilence. There will be an opportunity to put down flowers and candles in road 230. Free buns and cocoa outside the culture centre after the events has taken place.

In case of bad weather, the event will be relocated to Rabalder cafeteria and bakery / Longyearbyen cultural centre.

The square outside the main entrance of the cultural centre is closed for parking from 4.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.. It is advised that car owners who have parked there before 4.30 to move their cars.
